THE END OF SEMESTER-CRITICAL LITERACY-FINAL SHOWDOWN

Assalamualaikum. Currently in week 12. I don’t know how to respond on this. But wait, 3 weeks to go before final exam. This will mark the end of my journey in the land of brain squeezing critical thinking. Critical literacy have taught me a lot of skills that I need to improve my critical thinking and reasoning skills. After 12 weeks of learning Critical Literacy, my narrow minded have expanded to be clear minded.
It was quite hard for me at the beginning to really understand what and how critical thinking applies in our daily lives. I also have a hard time learn the analyzing skills towards critical thinking particularly the rule of ten. It is a fundamental rule in critical literacy subject which comprises of topic, content, source, audience, rhetorical function, purpose, perspective, positioning, impact and visual literacy. From topic until audience it was not much of a problem to complete it. But from rhetorical up to visual literacy, that’s where the part that I really need to apply all the skills that I have learned and squeeze the might of my brain to complete the rule of ten and the review of the academic texts that have been given. At this point is where I have a thought to give up on reviewing the academic articles. Our small scope of knowledge and our premature skills of critical thinking makes us to struggling to evaluate the possible content of the context. However through guidance, lesson and continuous practices from our lecturer Madam Zariati, I somehow managed to get it done in satisfaction. The perspective part of the rule of ten is the most challenging yet the part that I love the most. This is because this is the part where I can apply my critical thinking skills and address my own perspective whether to say “yes” or “no” to the stance of the particular academic texts.
Procrastination is my biggest enemy where it hinder my progress and my full potential. In assignment 1 i do my work in the last week and because of that i only manage to do my best on the article of Brexit and Ransom. I have to rush in the writing of the president articles because i have to go back to my hometown, perak due to the death of my relatives. If i do the assignment 2 to 3 weeks earlier, time wouldn't be much of an issue. Time management is important if we want to survive on this subject.
Honestly, I love this subject as this subject act as a platform for me to express my critical opinion through writing and exercise given by Madam Zariati. The module for this subject is very good. Madam Zariati successfully compiled the best information and exercise into one simple module. I only have one suggestion that can make learning CL to be fun.
1. The module must have page number on every page so that it is much easier for the student to go through every pages without the hassle of finding the pages.

LIFE IS A MERE ILLUSION AND JUST LIKE THE WORLD IS A STAGE AS WE USE IT AS A STEPPING STONE FOR A SHOWCASE OF OUR TALENTS.

I do believe that life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. Let’s take a look at our life. When we first step into school and education stage we are told by our elders to learn as best as we can while aiming for straight A’s. We were also told that we need to score good grades because we have to go to college and university. When we were asked why we need to sacrifices our blood and sweat to fund our way to college and university, we would say “we need to go to college to get a good job”. And when asked why we need a job? we would say “ for money “. There you go! we said money!. Money is one of the greatest illusion of life. Sometimes I wonder how much in our life do we dedicate to pursue more and more money and how much time do we really spend enjoying the fruits of our labor? “Not much” I would say. There are people who never satisfied with their income even if the money they make is 40 times larger than the amount of money ordinary people get. We want to obtain more money and spend it on many things to keep ourselves satisfied. But the thing is we are never satisfied. Ask yourself this, where are all those money and wealth that we spent our lifetime collecting would go when we are gone. But in the end all of these will not follow us when were gone from the world. That’s the illusion of material, one of the illusion of life.
I also believe that the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. If we live in a life and just died for nothing seems like it’s a waste of time right? Well that is where the sentence “Life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents” comes. Yes that’s right. What does it mean by stepping stone for a showcase of our talent means? Basically it means that we live in this world for a purpose and it is not what we have in our worldly life that is valuable but what we do is what counts. We as a human have our physical body. But our consciousness is what we call soul. Basically worldly materials feed the body but our soul need something special. Something that is untouchable like emotion such as the feeling of love, to be loved, and the most crucial in our existence is the reliance on God. As a human, it is normal that we depend on someone else. The ultimate dependency is towards God where from the earliest human until now believe in the existence of a creator where we pray, depended on, confess our feelings and share our joy and grief. The belief and reliance on God is what makes us to live in this world without the feelings of wastefulness. We believe that there will be another life where we will meet our Creator. That’s why people said that the world is a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents because we live in this world strive by our actions and our heart to please our Creator in the afterlife. If we don’t have the faith on God, we would say “Need money for college, need college for job, need job for money”. But, if we have the faith on God we would say “ need college to use knowledge for a greater good, need job for money, and need money to sustain life and helping people”.

THE INCIDENT OF BFM PRESENTERS IN RELATION WITH MALAY-MUSLIMS

Assalamualaikum. Today I am going to talk about a statement by a 23 year veteran academician Prof Dr. Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi. He who teaches architecture at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, wrote his views in his article, “The latest incident about BFM newsreader being threatened with death, rape and being burnt alive by those I assume to be Malay-Muslim netizens brings forth serious question for this country. Is this country safe for our children to live in? If a simple point is raised against such issue as Hudud or even such issue as democracy and clean elections can produce outburst of murder, rape and burning people alive, what does it say about our country, its citizens and our leadership.” (Speak Up, theSun, March 26, 2015).
This quote is a respond to the death and rape threat towards his daughter, Aishah Tajuddin after she sparked a sensitivity issue on the BFM’s video titled “Hudud Isi Periuk Nasi? [Kupas]” which have caused a rage among Muslim and Malay people in Malaysia. In the video his daughter is the presenter where she questions the Government of Kelantan about their ongoing fight for Hudud while the state suffers from homelessness because of flood, pornography issues, drug and divorce cases. She also said that the government politicize religion to distract the people of Kelantan from important issues. she added. She said “People argue over race and religion while the country’s economy is declining. Our debts go up instead.” And then she continue with an offensive comment “When the time comes, I don’t know if Hudud can fill our rice bowls,”.
Personally I think the Professor is trying to defend his own daughter after being threatened by Malay-Muslims communities . It is right to defend his daughter’s honor after being criticized and threatened. He is shocked with the attitude of some of the Malay people who threatened to kill, rape and even burn her alive. It is true that Some of the Malay people are so quick to make such threats in which we wonder how safe it is to live in our community nowadays. Some people may point the Muslim-Malay for being an extremist because of such behavior. Even i agree with the professor’s perspective by just looking at the statement of the professor which he said that even when someone criticize about important issues, they quickly receive grave threats. This shows how we particularly Malay people need to stop behaving like this. It is not wrong to criticize about something if it could lead to a greater improvements but not offending other people or breaking any moral or religious code . Even the great caliph of Islam Sayidina Umar Al-Khattab accept criticism and make full use of it. If we as a Malaysian like to criticize, then it is also a good indication that Malaysian people are the type of people who like to use their brain to think critically and use their freedom of speech to criticize and speak out.
However, it is not that simple in the case of Aisyah Tajuddin. If we take a closer look at the controversial BNF video, Aisyah Tajuddin did criticize about the government who was focusing too much on the issue of Hudud but neglecting other important issues such as homelessness because of flood, pornography issues, drug and divorce cases. But, the she did not only criticize but she make fun of the words “iman”. In the video she playfully sing a famous Malaysian nasheed “ Iman adalah mutiara ”. To non-muslim this may not be a big deal but the Muslim people like me however, we are very sensitive about the dignity of our religion such as the word “iman”. Of course we are offended by the way she seems to make fun of it. And then Aisyah Tajuddin said “When the time comes, I don’t know if hudud can fill our rice bowls,” and she continue with a gimmick where she trying to open a nasi lemak but it is empty in it and she says “no nasi lemak? but wait we have hudud”. This is clear as crystal that her action is offending and ridicule the law of Hudud. I understand that she is trying to claim that the government is neglecting the social problems of Kelantanese but focusing too much on Hudud Issue. However, by being cynical toward The law Of Hudud is unacceptable. Amongst all the religions in the world, Muslims have a deep connection with their religion. They love their religion. How can we Muslim-Malay who love their religion so much can just stand still and not reacting. Of course we feel very angry because Aisyah Tajuddin is provoking the Malay through that ignorant of a video. If we insult any religion and its sensitivity, of course they will react with hostile.
Now back to what the professor said If a simple point is raised against some issues and it can produce outburst of murder, rape and burning people alive, what does it say about our country, its citizens and our leadership?. It is true that we cannot act without thinking rationally and we cannot respond on something with hostility without carefully think and understand the issue. I agree that Malay people sometimes can be stubborn and narrow-minded because they can be so quick to judge. Unlike in developed civilization such as the Japanese, they are very modest, patient yet sharp in making decisions. Even in Malay culture we are encouraged to have these qualities so that we can prosper even in a multicultural society. I am a Malay person. One thing about The Malays are that they have “temperamental” habits. They being serious on something by season.. They are prone to respond to seasonal issues but neglect the ongoing issue happening around them. If a “hot” issue occur, they are so quick to react and then forgot about other important issues around them. Seasonal and ongoing issues must both be in consideration. The Malay also loves political sectors that comes and goes but neglect the economic sectors that must be passed down from generation to generation. This is why temperamental habits is the factor for the Malay to be unable to successfully solve any issue and conflict. When new problem rises, we will forgot the older one and in time another problem come and come and come and the next generation will inherit heap of problems. We need think and find the truth of something before quickly believe something . Don’t show others that Malay people have limited perspectives. Look at some of Malay student in universities. When there are propaganda to demolish study loan and promote free education, the Malay unite in glory to support the propaganda but when it comes to academic performance, it’s doesn’t look glorious at all. Lazy and not united. Only study when the exams is around the corner. Just look at our leaders today. Not all of them are bad. But some are just completely undependable. Putting up unnecessary projects that costs a lot of money. Choosing an assertive and brilliant leader like Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad is very crucial if we really do want to solve this problems. But leader is not enough. We as a Malay community must make an effort to change our self so that we can become a competitive and intellectual race. To the uneducated people who put together the elements of provocation in their motives and action, they need to understand that they can’t expect any people of any group to react without hostility if they are offended. From my perspectives it is the person who provoking or support the provocation are more guilty and should be accused for being uncivilized. If we all respect each other while think rationally, we can live in in harmony as Malaysian.

WOMEN SHOULDNT BE BEHIND THE WHEELS

Assalamualaikum guys i hope you have a wonderful day today. Have you heard that women are banned to drive in Saudi Arabia? Women driving in Saudi Arabia is not technically against the law, but is banned in practice. Currently, Saudi Arabia is the only country that ban their women from driving. So what drives Saudi’s legislator into applying such bans? Although to our own perspectives, this seems to be discrimination towards women’s right . However, there must reasons for that issue to occur. There must be some acceptable reasons why women shouldn’t be behind the wheels.
I believe that women should not be behind wheels. First as we know we cannot judge emotionally when we heard or see something especially on statement like this. Before quickly judging on something, critical analysis is needed to fully understand the situation entirely and then we make our own judgments whether to say “yes” or “no”. Now i will tell you why women shouldn't be behind the wheel. First let’s take a look at what Saudi Cleric has to say on women shouldn't be behind the wheel. Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Shaikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh said that driving would leave women vulnerable to a number of problems.
Leaving them freedom to drive could lead to going out without any permission or knowledge of their relatives and this could cause problems for families as they ‘would not know where they were. Not only that, women are possibly exposed to serious dangers. For example, If the car stops in the middle of nowhere there is a high chance to get molested .As we know women are vulnerable to such dangers and with the driving ban implemented on women, this will keep the woman away from such risks and that is why this measure is imperative for the greater good.
Second, most women are lack of confidence and skills in driving. Women typically are more nervous than men. Braking frequently even when it is unnecessary is not just annoying to the drivers behind you but it is also dangerous. This is because of lack of confidence and nervousness. Furthermore, nervousness in driving can also be seen when someone is driving 20 to 30 kmh under the speed limit it also potentially more dangerous than going accordingly to the speed limit because we need to also aware with our surroundings, our speedometer, and the drivers around us. Not only that when someone is driving slowly especially in a one lane road, the drivers behind them are forced to take risks to undertake them. This could lead to risks of head on accidents. These nervous drivers usually unable to think clearly that when they are stalling many cars they have to go a little bit to the side to give the cars at the back a safer opportunities to overtake. They sometime does not responds to flashlight because of the nervous drivers who may focusing only on the road but not the mirror altogether. I am not trying to stereotyping women with bad driving. Some women are a better driver than myself but this is what I have seen through my own experiences and what people said to me that many women have inadequate driving skills due to factors like confidence and others. But this doesn’t also makes men a better driver because we all know that male drivers are far more aggressive drivers than women. But, at least they are much more aware of his surroundings, his speed and usually recognize danger around them while responding immediately to avoid such dangers. I really do think that women should not be behind the wheels until the government could enforce the driving lesson agencies to improve their driving lesson to overcome the bad habits on the road, teaching drivers to be more confident and putting the requirements to get a driving license more strict.

My expectations on Critical literacy

Assalamualaikum.... How’s your day? Good? me? well it’s been a real good day for me today and I am currently feeling good right now because the rain has just started falling and it makes me feel good to write a blog while enjoying a cup of coffee. What I am to write today is about a subject that is not as what I thought it was. In my semester 4 subjects this subject is the one the most controversial subject and the seniors always talked about it. Well, make no mistake it’s the “Critical Literacy”, a subject that one of my senior once said “as tough as nails and feels like doing a PhD”. My first impression toward what he said is scared. I thought that this subject requires me to write large numbers of words and I am going to be struggling with insufficient of ideas. Well, thanks to the exaggerated rumors my seniors brought to me that caused me to exaggerate even more on my impression towards the subject.
My expectation on this particular subject is that it can encourage me to think critically of any fact or issues such as in social contexts like socio economics status, race. class, gender, sexual orientation and many more. I also can learn to apply critical thinking to overcome problems. When I am critically literate, I have mastered the ability to read, gather, analyze and critique messages, facts and theories in texts in order to understand in depth of the knowledge. Furthermore, I can make separate facts from opinion. I also think that by learning this subject will exposes students to the biases and hidden agendas within texts.
I also hope that I can master the reasoning skills that comes with critical thinking. The skills such as the difference between reason and emotion and justifying our problem. Perception, euphemisms and dysphemism is another thing that I expect to learn. I really do hope to get a good grade, explore the available wisdoms in this subject, mastering the skills of critical literacy and implement it on real life scenario. I also hope that I can become more mature, calm and collective in personality. By learning the reasoning skills, I hope I can improve myself in arguing others opinion based on facts. I expect to successfully make it through this subject.
